STORYLINE:
A thick column of black smoke was seen Monday morning over parts of Deir al-Balah city in central Gaza following a series of Israeli strikes, according to residents,
The smoke covered the eastern areas of the city, an Associated Press video showed.
Residents say Israeli warplanes struck the area multiple times overnight and Monday morning.
The strikes are part of Israel’s 14-month war against Hamas, which began when the Palestinian militant group led an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.
The Hamas-led attack killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians.
The militants also abducted around 250 people.
Some 100 hostages are still inside Gaza, at least a third of whom are believed to be dead.
Israel’s offensive has killed over 45,600 Palestinians in Gaza, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many were combatants.
The Israeli military says it has killed over 17,000 militants, without providing evidence.
