STORYLINE:
1. China just announced that Premier Li Qiang will hold a dialogue with the heads of 10 international economic organizations. What are China’s expectations for this "1+10" dialogue?
Last month, President Xi Jinping attended the APEC Economic Leaders’ Informal Meeting and the G20 Leaders’ Summit, where he called for the international community to strengthen coordination of international macroeconomic policies and create an open, inclusive, and non-discriminatory environment for international economic cooperation. At this critical juncture, China is holding the "1+10" dialogue to strengthen communication over the policy with the heads of international economic organizations, jointly assess the prospects for world economic development, promote the improvement of the global economic governance system, and foster common prosperity of the world.
2. Taiwan’s leader Lai Ching-te has concluded his Pacific trips with transit in Hawaii and Guam in the U.S. What is your comment on this?
The U.S. insisted on arranging for the leader of the Taiwan region Lai Ching-te to transit through Hawaii and Guam, engaging in official exchanges, helping Taiwan expand its so-called international space, and providing a platform for Taiwan independence separatist activities. This seriously violates the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, undermines China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and sends a gravely wrong signal to Taiwan independence separatist forces. China strongly deplores this and has lodged solemn protests with the U.S.
The one-China principle is the political foundation of China-U.S. relations and a basic norm of international relations. The Taiwan issue is the first red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. Taiwan independence separatist activities are incompatible with peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. China urges the U.S. to adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, fulfill the commitments made by U.S. leaders not to support Taiwan independence, stop official exchanges with Taiwan, stop hollowing out and distorting the one-China principle, stop any form of support for Taiwan independence separatist forces and their activities, and take concrete actions to stabilize China-U.S. relations and maintain peace in the Taiwan Strait.
I must stress that relying on the U.S. to seek independence will hit a dead end, and using Taiwan to contain China is doomed to fail. No one should underestimate the unwavering determination, firm will, and strong capability of the Chinese government and people to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.
3. Lai Ching-te said today he is confident in deepening cooperation with the next Trump administration in the U.S. Any comment?
China firmly opposes any form of official exchange between the U.S. and Taiwan and firmly opposes the U.S. supporting and conniving at Taiwan independence separatists and their activities in any form. We urge the U.S. to recognize the Taiwan independence nature of Lai Ching-te and his Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities, recognize the serious harm of their separatist activities to peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait, adhere to the one-China principle and the three China-U.S. joint communiqués, stop interfering in Taiwan affairs, stop meddling in China’s internal affairs, and stop supporting and conniving at Taiwan independence separatist forces.
I have noted the relevant reports.
