“In the next four years I’m hoping to see Ghana in a higher place, where there is no need for us even to be traveling. Ghana will be like any other place in the world, better place for we Ghanaians to live in, to feel comfortable. I know Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is going to do that for us.”

STORYLINE:
The two main political parties vying for Ghana’s presidency held their final rallies in Accra Thursday, in an election that has been largely dominated by the country’s economic crisis.

Former President John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is the main opposition candidate facing Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Bawumia has been vice president for the last eight years under President Nana Akufo-Addo, who was elected in 2016, amid widespread discontent with then-ruling party the NDC and after months of intense power shortages and high profile corruption scandals.

Then-President John Dramani Mahama conceded defeat quickly.

He is now running for president again, having lost his bid for a second term in 2020.

Recent years have seen Ghana’s Cedi become one of the poorest performing currencies in the region, and inflation, particularly on food prices, has skyrocketed.

The presidential and parliamentary elections will be held concurrently on Dec. 7.

It will be the ninth consecutive general election since the country’s return to multi-party democracy in 1992.
