"This is not an accident. This is a state policy to put pressure on and worsen the situation of genocidal repression that we already know. So we’re seeing a lot of murders of people from the poor communities, of Black people, by the state.”

STORYLINE:
Hundreds of protesters gathered in Sao Paulo on Thursday evening, to demand an end to police violence against Black and poor people and demand justice for victims.
The demonstration was organized by civil rights activists after several videos allegedly showing cases of aggression and misconduct by police officers came to light this week through local television stations and social media.
In one of the videos released on Monday, a police officer was seen throwing a man off a bridge and into a river, prompting a backlash. The victim survived.
A 29-year-old officer was arrested over the incident on Thursday morning, after the Military Justice responded to the request from the Military Police Internal Affairs.
Another 12 police officers involved in the incident were suspended from working on the streets after being identified.
Protesters say the case is part of a violent culture of São Paulo’s military police and stressed that Black and poor people are disproportionately targeted by police forces.
“This act is in solidarity with the relatives who have lost loved ones murdered by the state. But we are also demanding that the killers be punished," said Julia Soares, one of the activists demonstrating in front of Sao Paulo Municipal theatre, demanding that authorities "demilitarize the military police."
The military police in Brazil are responsible for maintaining public order.
“This is not an accident. This is a state policy to put pressure on and worsen the situation of genocidal repression that we already know. So we’re seeing a lot of murders of people from the poor communities, of Black people, by the state,” said Luana Alves, City Counselor of São Paulo.
Although this case has sparked a social outcry, it is one of many which were revealed in the last few days.
Sao Paulo Governor, Tarcísio de Freitas condemned the violent acts and said that there will be consequences for officers responsible.
The social outcry has prompted political pressure on the governor who took office in January 2023, backed by former president Jair Bolsonaro.
