STORYLINE:
Indonesia’s immigration officers have arrested a Chinese suspect sought by Beijing for helping transfer and launder over $17 million from a criminal online gambling group in China, officials said Thursday.
Yan Zhenxing, a Singapore permanent resident holder, was arrested on Monday after an immigration examination in a bustling ferry terminal that connects Batam and Singapore, identified him as a wanted person, said Yuldi Yusman, the Director of Immigration Supervision and Enforcement.
The man arrived in Batam for a holiday with his three children who were later picked up by his wife after he was detained.
He said the arrest was made after Interpol issued a so-called Red Notice for him, a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to detain or arrest a suspect wanted by a specific country.
Indonesian authorities brought the suspect, wearing a detainee’s orange shirt and a facemask, before reporters at a news conference Thursday in the capital, Jakarta. The suspect did not make any statements and was not asked any questions.
