1. SOUNDBITE (English) Ciaran McQuillan, The Associated Press:
"So what next for South Korea’s beleaguered president Yoon Suk Yeol. Well, a joint motion to impeach him was introduced this morning in a parliamentary plenary session here at South Korea’s national assembly building. Now, it must be voted upon in the next 72 hours, and the opposition says they expect the vote to take place on Saturday. Impeaching President Yoon would require the support of two-thirds of the national assembly or 200 of its 300 members. The opposition parties together have a 192 seats. However, the People Party which President Yoon is a member, this morning announced that its 108 lawmakers will vote against impeachment. That means the opposition parties will need at least eight members of the ruling conservative bloc to switch sides, to ensure that this deeply unpopular president is deprived of his powers. If the opposition succeeds, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo who holds the No. 2 position in the South Korean government, would take over presidential responsibilities. South Korea’s brief period of martial law was ended here at the national assembly building early on Wednesday morning by those lawmakers who defied the military in an extraordinary early hour sitting. President Yoon’s fate will now be sealed by those same lawmakers here in the coming days."
