Rebel leaders in Syria have begun to assert their control, closely watched by the international community. The head of the so-called joint ‘Military Operations Command,’ Abu Mohammed al-Jolani has dropped the nom de guerre associated with his jihadist past and is now using his real name: Ahmed al-Shara. He’s trying to bolster his legitimacy by presenting a more moderate public image. Syria’s parliament says it supports the people’s will to build a new future. What that will look like remains unclear, but many Syrians say it can only get better.
