“It’s a great honour for us today to hand over the Pope-mobil to the Holy Father. At Mercedes-Benz we have almost a hundred years’ tradition. The first car was handed over in 1930 to Pope Pius XI, but today for Pope Francis we have something very special. It is the very first Pope-mobil that is fully electric, based on the all electric G class that we launched this year. But also on top of that, hundreds of hours of passion and craftsmanship has gone into this vehicle: the chair for his Holyness of course at the centrepiece, but every detail down to the crest or the little platforms that the Swiss Guards can stand on at the back of the vehicle. The team that has built this car, they have thought of everything.”

12. SOUNDBITE (English), Ola Källenius, CEO of Mercedes-Benz Group:
“The Electric G is of course a car that could go anywhere. In this particular, unique, one-of-a-kind Pope-mobil, I think that the Holy Father will travel a little bit lower speeds, but almost floating across the streets in this very quiet electric vehicle.”

STORYLINE:
Pope Francis has gone fully electric for his next installment of the Pope-mobil, which was revealed at the Vatican on Wednesday.
The new four-wheel-drive car is in line with the Pontiff’s preaching on environmental protection and will have zero carbon emissions.
The car was manufactured by Mercedes-Benz, who handed over the keys to the Pope who will use the car to safely greet crowds of the faithful who gather for his masses.
Pope Francis has always kept a low profile both during official trips, when he normally uses a white Fiat 500, and also during his local movements in Rome, where he was often seen in a very ordinary Ford Focus.
But during official ceremonies he needs an open car to wave to the crowds, bring children on board and bless new-borns. That is when he needs his Pope-mobil and during the many ceremonies of the 2025 Jubilee the new car will be used.
He is expected to use the electric Mercedes G Class when he is driven though Saint Peter square during the 2025 Jubilee.
The car features a very comfortable rotating heated chair for the Pope, rear platforms for the Swiss guards and two crests with the symbol of Pope Francis on both sides.
