STORYLINE:
Street protests in Tbilisi continued for a fifth night as demonstrators and riot police exchange fireworks and tear gas following the government’s decision last week to suspend EU membership talks.
Wearing gas masks and using homemade shields to deflect police tear gas canisters, thousands of demonstrators in the Georgian capital converged on parliament again on Tuesday evening.
Like on previous nights, riot police used water cannons and tear gas to push back the protesters on the capital’s central boulevard.
Nearly 300 protesters have been detained, and 26 people, including three police officers, have been hospitalized with injuries.
