STORYLINE:
People took to the streets of Seoul following the South Korean president’s declaration of martial law late Tuesday.
Yoon declared martial law, vowing to eliminate “anti-state” forces as he struggles against an opposition that controls the country’s parliament and that he accuses of sympathizing with communist North Korea.
Less than three hours later, parliament voted to lift the declaration, with National Assembly Speaker Woo Won Shik declaring that the martial law was “invalid” and that lawmakers “will protect democracy with the people.”
Seemingly hundreds of people gathered in front of the country’s parliament building, waving banners and calling for Yoon’s impeachment following his declaration.
"I believe I should step forward and take action as a citizen of the country," office worker, Han Dong Gun, who joined the protest, said.
"Things like this should never happen. It feels like we are returning to the era of dictatorship. I believe it is not right for President Yoon to act unilaterally."
Yoon said his government withdrew military personnel following the bipartisan parliamentary vote that rejected martial law, and the measure was formally lifted around 4:30 a.m. during a Cabinet meeting.
The president’s surprising move harkened back to an era of authoritarian leaders that the country has not seen since the 1980s, and it was immediately denounced by the opposition and the leader of Yoon’s own party.
