"Today, we provide a product for the consumer, a local product, a product with high value. Also, its added value is high for the rural communities, for women, empowering these families. Through guidance, financing, support, as well as empowerment and marketing, the ministry is working to empower these families so that they become part of the food industry. As you know, food industries are the basis and pillar of national food security."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Lawrence al-Majali, spokesperson for the Agriculture Ministry:
"We are talking about a promising season. The Ministry of Agriculture’s figures indicate that there are more than 175,000 tons of olives that arrived at the presses. Our expectations are between 26,000 and 30,000 tons of olive oil. These numbers are actually more than we need. We need 24,000 to 25,000 tons annually, so there is a surplus of 4,000 to 5,000 tons, according to our expectations."

"We wait for the olive festival from year to year because more than anything, we get to market our products through it. We market our products through it, and it contributes to increasing our income."

"The olive season is a source of income for many Jordanian families. The oil revenue is not just for the farmer. The farmer spends money on the farm and pays the cost of production at the olive oil press, the cost of plowing the land, fertilizer, harvesting, transportation, press fees and marketing fees. Therefore, a very wide group of people in Jordan benefit from the olive season."

"The festival is very nice because it reflects our civilization through oil and olives. When I am here, I like to come and check out (the festival). And the products here are all good products because it is all made by hand, or most of it. The work of the women who are participating is great and it is made by hand. And you come across a variety of flavors."

STORYLINE:
Olives in a variety of shades and colors filled the stands at an annual festival in Amman.

Fans of the olives and the golden oil turned up to check the products at the festival, which kicked off on Thursday.

The 10-day olive festival – Jordan’s largest agricultural exhibition – features 900 participants from across the country.

The aim of the festival is to support olive producers in rural and Bedouin communities as well as empower women in the industry by helping them market their products.

Olive trees cover an area of 600,000 dunums of land across Jordan, giving work to thousands of farmers.
