Breaking: VW workers in Germany go on strike as thousands risk losing jobs | DW News

Workers at Germany’s car giant Volkswagen are going on strike, in an escalating industrial dispute where thousands of jobs are at stake at one of the country’s biggest employers.

The IG Metall trade union called for the strike to protest against proposed wage cuts and potential plant closures. VW earlier rejected a proposal by workers representatives to save 1.5 billion euros. The company says it has been hit hard by high manufacturing costs, although it also paid out billions of euros in dividends in recent years.
