STORYLINE:
Displaced Lebanese families celebrated on Tuesday in the yard of their shelter in Sidon city ahead of the possible announcement of a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah.
Later in the evening it was announced that Israel has agreed to the ceasefire that will take effect at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
“Our joy is very great. Of course, we cannot forget the sadness for our martyrs," said Kamal al-Haj Ali ahead of the announcement.
“We are happy because we will return to our country and homeland in the south," added Hala Saeed, who had been displaced from her home in the Al-Housh area of Tyre city.
An Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire would mark the first major step toward ending the regionwide unrest triggered by Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. But it does not address the devastating war in Gaza.
Hezbollah began attacking Israel a day after Hamas’ attack. The fighting in Lebanon escalated into all-out war in September with massive Israeli airstrikes across the country and an Israeli ground invasion of the south.
