6. SOUNDBITE (English) Amy Shallcross, Delaware River Basin Commission:
“Really what brought us here is the drought. The two months of very low flows, and the fact that we’re in the fall where the tide tends to be a little bit stronger, pushing the salt upstream.”

“The way we protect drinking water intakes from salt is through reservoir releases. We want to make sure that there’s enough water coming downstream to dilute the saltwater from the ocean.”

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Amy Shallcross, Delaware River Basin Commission:
“We are doing a lot of studies to see if we are going to have enough water in the future with both climate change and sea level rise to continue to be able to push that salt downstream when we have these droughts. So we’re looking at potential additional sources of water, but we’re not sure that we need them yet, we’re looking into that.”

13. SOUNDBITE (English) Amy Shallcross, Delaware River Basin Commission:
“I think right now we’re okay, we’re starting to get rain, the tide starts to weaken a little bit. So if we have a lot of freshwater coming downstream, we’ll be okay, but I think the public really needs to worry about it in the future, if we had to go to additional sources of water, that costs money to build. And if you had to increase the level of treatment, that’s really high energy and potentially environmentally impactful.”

“There’s always that situation that you haven’t anticipated. And so I would say the East is not water-rich, we’re water adequate, and we need to recognize that.”

STORYLINE:
Salty oceanwater is creeping up the Delaware River, the source for much of the drinking water for Philadelphia and millions of others, brought on by drought conditions and sea level rise. It’s prompting officials to tap reservoirs to push the unpotable tide back downstream.
