STORYLINE:
French farmers protested in Strasbourg on Tuesday against an EU-Mercosur trade deal as they fear it would create unfair competition for them.
Several dozen tractors tried to go in front of the European Parliament but were stopped before reaching the area by riot police.
The EU and the Mercosur trade bloc, composed of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Bolivia, reached an initial agreement in 2019, but negotiations stumbled due to opposition from farmers and some European governments, particularly France.
It aims to create one of the largest free trade zones in the world, covering over 700 million people and nearly 25% of global GDP.
Much like the U.S.-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement, its goal is to reduce tariffs and trade barriers, making it easier for businesses on both sides to export goods.
For the EU, the deal would mean lower tariffs on products like cars, machinery and chemicals. Mercosur countries would benefit from better access to EU markets for agricultural exports such as beef, poultry and sugar.
The deal faces strong opposition from European farmers and environmental groups over concerns about unfair competition and deforestation.
Supporters like Germany and Brazil see it as a chance to boost trade and economic growth.
