"I was accused of wanting to take Romania out of NATO and the European Union. False. I never said that. But I said that I want to negotiate and I want to put the national interest first, because we cannot accept everything. Everything must be negotiated for the benefit of the Romanian people, regardless of what club you are in."

5. SOUNDBITE (Romanian) Calin Georgescu, presidential candidate:
“I want to state clearly and precisely that the war in Ukraine must stop urgently. For me, it is the strategy of peace, not the strategy of war. Moreover, yesterday I saw how young people were manipulated into the streets. Just as they took them out into the streets, they will also take them to the war. And I don’t know if parents are prepared to send their children to go to war, and never see them come back.”

7. SOUNDBITE (Romanian) Calin Georgescu, presidential candidate:
"The time has come for the destiny and rights of the Romanian nation to be respected. The time has come for us to understand that the destiny and rights of the Romanian nation are eternal. The time has come for us to rebuild our lives, a dignified life, with honour, and then Romania will be victorious and eternal. I underline that we must understand our common ideals and remain forever dignified.‘’

STORYLINE:
Romania’s presidential candidate Calin Georgescu spoke to the media on Tuesday evening after all votes of Sunday’s first round of elections were counted and final results were made public.
“The time has come for the destiny and rights of the Romanian nation to be respected,” he said in a brief statement.
Calin Georgescu, who ran independently, will face reformist Elena Lasconi in a Dec. 8. runoff after most local surveys predicted he would win less than 10% of the vote.
Georgescu, 62, was ahead after nearly all ballots were counted to nearly 23%.
According to local media, Georgescu in the past has praised Russian President Vladimir Putin as “a man who loves his country” and called Ukraine “an invented state.”
He has also sparked controversy for describing Romanian fascist and nationalist leaders from the 1930s and 1940s as national heroes.
“I want to state clearly and precisely that the war in Ukraine must stop urgently," he also told reporters on Tuesday.
Romania’s president serves a five-year term in the European Union and has significant decision-making powers in areas such as national security, foreign policy and judicial appointments.
Georgescu’s campaign positions included supporting farmers, reducing import dependence and ramping up local energy and food production.
His rising popularity will be tested when he faces Lasconi.
If she wins the final vote, she will be the first female president in Romania’s history.
Romania will also hold parliamentary elections on Dec. 1 that will determine the country’s next government and prime minister.
