STORYLINE:
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Monday that the Lithuanian plane crash "shows what volatile times we are living in in the middle of Europe."
Speaking on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Italy, Baerbock said "we have to say at this point that we and our Lithuanian partners must now seriously ask ourselves whether this was an accident or, after last week, another hybrid incident?"
A DHL cargo plane crashed on approach to an airport in Lithuania’s capital on Monday morning and skidded into a nearby house, killing a Spanish crew member. The cause of the crash was under investigation.
Lithuanian officials acknowledged that one line of inquiry will look at any Russian involvement but stressed there is no evidence yet.
Western governments suspect that Russian intelligence is carrying out sabotage in retaliation for their support for Ukraine.
In July two incendiary devices caught fire in packages destined for cargo planes, one in Germany, the other in the U.K.
