4. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Mari Arai, Sado City Council Member:
“For South Korea, to truly claim that this is worthy of being a World Heritage site, we must talk about the large group of laborers who were here — the Korean laborers who lived during the period of the Japan-Korea annexation and colonial era. If we count only from 1940 to 1945, there were over 1,500 people, but there were also others from before that period. Additionally, there were people who came as family members during that time, though they are not counted as laborers. So, in total, I believe the number easily exceeds 2,000.”

"I believe it is important to record how those individuals, regardless of whether this place has been registered or not as a World Heritage site. But now there has been a commitment made to the international community to exhibit information about those people, I believe this issue should be addressed candidly. The South Korean government has pointed out that this has not been done here, and they have specifically requested that the exhibition be revised properly."

"The main display is the history of the technology of the Sado Gold Mine, which is on the first floor. As for the second floor, in a room that most people don’t visit, there is an exhibition about the lives of laborers from the Korean Peninsula, presented under the category of ‘Korean Peninsula-born laborers.’ This is the current situation."
