STORYLINE:
Picketing is continuing outside a hotel-casino near the Las Vegas Strip and F1 race track
The Culinary Workers Union walkout began Friday at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas. Members are striking for a new contract, including a raise comparable to pay at other Las Vegas resorts. The strike continues as second annual Las Vegas Grand Prix brings racing to the Strip.
Culinary members approached the hotel-casino in a effort to get employees there printed checks with out needing to cross the picket line. D Taylor, former International President of UNITE HERE said “The company was saying that strikers had to go inside, cross the picket line to get their paychecks. We’ve been on so many strikes. No employer has ever, ever requested that. So we said, no… You got to bring them out because we’re not going to have people go inside when they’re on strike. We’re worried about their safety.”
The workers did receive there checks.
The walkout is the first since 2002 for the largest labor union in Nevada. Other properties on and off the Strip reached deadline agreements with the union just before the Formula 1 race a year ago. Those five-year contracts contained salary increases of about 32%.
