STORYLINE:
The Pope’s Christmas tree, a 29-meter (95 feet), 5.5 ton red fir, was lifted by crane and placed in the center of St. Peter’s square on Friday morning.
The 70-year-old tree comes from the village of Ledro in the mountains of Alto Adige in northern Italy.
The town is also providing the Vatican with an additional 39 regular-sized Christmas trees.
According to Renato Girardi, Ledro’s mayor, town officials first made the request to provide the Vatican with a Christmas tree nine years ago in 2015.
In the coming days, the Christmas tree will be decorated and then lit in a special ceremony on Dec. 7.
Pope John Paul II started the tradition of having a Christmas tree in St. Peter’s Square back in 1982.
As in the past, this year saw environmental activists protest the plan to cut down a living tree to send to the Vatican.
A group of activists from a group called “Bearsandothers” sent Pope Francis a letter with 40,000 signatures asking him to save the tree from Ledro.
They say cutting down trees goes against the teachings of the Pope about saving the planet.
Ledro officials say the tree would have been cut down any way as part of the maintenance of the forest area.
