"So this is a manuscript by Frederic Chopin, the French Polish composer of the 19th century. It’s very small, the size of an index card. It’s a one page piece of music. I found this manuscript last May here at the Morgan Library in a collection that had come to us in 2019."

"Discoveries like this are quite rare. As you may have heard of the Mozart discovery a few months ago, these really don’t happen very often. For Chopin, this is the first in almost 100 years. The when we made this discovery, we immediately put this manuscript on our Web site for all to discover and share."

"Finding anything by a composer like Chopin is very meaningful. It would be like a playwright finding some new Shakespeare or a writer finding some new Dickens or something like that. For me, Chopin is able to conjure any sound, any character. That’s part of his brilliance and part of his expertise as a composer."

STORYLINE:
A previously unknown musical work written in the hand of European composer Frederic Chopin has been found in a library in New York City.
The Morgan Library & Museum says the untitled piece represents the first “lost” manuscript of the 18th century Romantic era virtuoso discovered since 1930.
Robinson McClellan, the museum’s curator, says he stumbled across the work last May while going through a collection brought to the Manhattan museum years earlier.
He worked with outside experts to verify its authenticity, but debate remains whether the waltz is an original Chopin work or merely one written in his hand.
