++BEGINS AND ENDS ON SOUNDBITE++

Washington – 20 November 2024
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Thom Tillis, (R) North Carolina:
“I want President Trump to consider, if it’s possible, to recess appoint a National Labor Relations Board member, or CFPB member, or some of these hyper-partisan recess appointments that Obama did. Let’s just best them by at least one. But not for a cabinet level position. That should be absolutely off the table. And quite honestly, any serious candidate for a cabinet level position, I would have to really wonder if they would want it or be willing to accept it under a recess appointment. These positions are too important and carry too much weight internationally to take a shortcut. However, I really do hope we get at least 33 recess appointments.”

2. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Thom Tillis, (R) North Carolina:
“Every nominee, whether they are Biden’s in the last administration, or whether they are President Trump, deserve a process. Every member should meet with them regardless of whether they’re a no vote or yes vote. I met with a Supreme Court nominee that I had every intention of voting against and did. So people should meet and go through a respectful professional process, it’s pretty straightforward.”
3. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Thom Tillis, (R) North Carolina:
“I think that it’ll be the worst spectacle you can imagine. I think the Democrats are going to be cruel, as they were with Kavanaugh. Facts have to go where facts go, but they’re not going to pull any punches, no doubt.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Lindsay Graham, (R) South Carolina:
“No rubber stamps and no lynch mob. I’m not going to be part of a process that leaks information that shouldn’t be leaked. I’m not going to legitimize the process to destroy the man because people don’t like his politics. He will be held to account in the confirmation process. He deserves the chance to make his argument why he should be attorney general. As to me, I’ve had a history of deferring to presidential nominations. I think Matt is a very, very smart guy and these allegations will be dealt with in committee. But he deserves a chance to confront his accusers and the process is turning into a lynch mob. And I’m not going to be part of that.”

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Susan Collins, (R) Maine:
(Reporter: Do you have any concerns about the allegations that are out there about him?)
“Well of course. I said from the beginning that I was shocked by the nomination given the many allegations, but that’s why it’s important that the Senate go through its process of making sure that we have a background check, that we have a Senate investigation which involves extensive interviews and questionnaires and then a public hearing.”

STORYLINE:
Republican Senators are weighing in on President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of former Rep. Matt Gaetz as Attorney General.
Sen. Thom Tillis, (R) North Carolina, said he hopes that President-elect Trump forces recess appointments, but not for cabinet nominations such as Attorney General.
Gaetz, who has been calling senators and is expected to start meeting with some of them as soon as this week, is an unconventional pick for the nation’s top law enforcement official.
Sen. Lindsay Graham, (R) South Carolina, said he is not going to be a part of a “lynch mob” involving Gaetz.
And Sen. Susan Collins, (R) Maine, said background checks and Senates processes are important for this reason.
