STORYLINE:
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida met with members of the Japanese community Saturday during his visit to Brazil.
He participated in a flower laying ceremony at the Japanese Pavilion in Ibirapuera Park to pay tribute to early settlers from Japan in Sao Paulo.
Kishida also planted a cherry tree, visited a Japanese exposition and attended a business meeting.
Brazil is home to the world’s largest Japanese community outside Japan, with over 2.7 million Japanese citizens and their descendants, most of them in Sao Paulo.
Before departing for Japan, Kishida held a news conference where he summarized the results of his visit to Latin America and his plans to cooperate on issues such as hunger, poverty, energy transition and sustainable development.
