“Well in COP28 we had this whole framework of the global goal and adaptation. It was supposedly adopted, but there was no form of adoption. Again, as I mentioned, this is like the fourth round of big promises being made that didn’t happen. It was just a broken promise, made on a broken promise, made on another broken promise on another broken promise. And this year we’re basically heading in the same direction. Like we are at this huge traffic light point. We are now at this point of what do we do and nothing is happening, nothing at all.”

“I would say for the first thing is specifically here, developed countries need to pledge for adaptation finance and provide public finance, not through loans and debt but through grants and donations, and things of the like, cancelling debt around adaptation. There are things that are very necessary.”

STORYLINE:
Activists held a demonstration on Tuesday to criticize the failure of delivering adaptation finance at the ongoing United Nations climate talks in Baku.

Amalen Sathananthar, a Malaysian activist from the Artivist Network, said since COP15 in 2009 the adaptation funding has been repeated time and time again but never delivered.

“This is the false ground of big promises being made that didn’t happen. It was just a broken promise made on a broken promise,” said Amalen.

The funds include $100 billion annually paid by developed countries to developing countries from 2020 to 2025 though public and private sources.

Adaptation finance is the financial aid offered to vulnerable countries to help communities build stronger buildings, drought-tolerant crops and other measures to reduce the risk they may suffer from extreme climate events such as storms or droughts.

Talks in Baku are focused on getting more climate cash for developing countries to transition away from fossil fuels, adapt to climate change and pay for damages caused by extreme weather.

But countries are far apart on how much money that will require.

A group of developing nations put the sum at $1.3 trillion, while rich countries are yet to name a figure. Several experts estimated that the money needed for climate finance is around $1 trillion.
