2. SOUNDBITE (English) Jon M. Chu, director – on speaking to his inner child while making the film:
“I do. I feel like those are my therapy sessions, mostly as to dealing with my inner child who likes to play a lot. And bu t I feel like also having kids changes it because you look at your kids and see the way they see the world and you want them to live in a world where the story that they’re being told is something that they have a little bit of control over. What does a hero look like? What does a villain look like? What does beauty look like? And I think that being a storyteller, I get to contribute to the story of the world that they get to grow up in. And so anything that I could do to help put optimism in the world and show inclusion for them, for their friends, to me, that’s a great, worthy job to do.”

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Ethan Slater, actor – on singing live on set:
“I was really excited about the idea of singing live as somebody who did a lot of theater. I like, I feel I feel like you get a lot out of performing a song by singing it live and knowing it’s live. And so I was really looking forward to that. And then everybody seemed really into it and delivered. But yeah, they, they led the way in every way.”

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Stephen Schwartz, composer:
“Well, they don’t actually have such different backgrounds. They’ve just become well known for different things. But, you know, they’re both musical theater performers. They’ve both been on Broadway. So, you know, they bring those legit skills and craft to it which is why they were able to do so much of the movie singing live as opposed to having to pre-record everything, you know, which makes it so much more exciting and so much more immediate.”
