STORYLINE:
IN OCTOBER THIS BOOKSTORE ON THE EASTERN COAST OF CHINA WAS AMONG THE LATEST TO CLOSE ITS DOORS.
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FOUND THAT AT LEAST A DOZEN BOOKSTORES IN CHINA HAVE BEEN SHUTTERED OR TARGETED FOR CLOSURE.
IN THE LAST FEW MONTHS ALONE, INDEPENDENT BOOKSTORES HAVE BECOME A NEW BATTLEGROUND IN CHINA SWEPT UP IN THE RULING COMMUNIST PARTY’S CRACKDOWN ON GOVERNMENT DISSENT AND FREE EXPRESSION.
SOME BELIEVE A SLUGGISH CHINESE ECONOMY MAY BE DRIVING THE GOVERNMENT TO EXERT GREATER CONTROL.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Jia Jia, Visiting Researcher at University of Tokyo:
“This is one way for the Office Against Pornography and Illegal Publications to generate income. If it is getting stricter on the issue everywhere, I believe that they are doing this for the purpose of collecting fines.”
BUT AS BOOKSTORES CLOSE IN CHINA, NEW ONES ARE OPENING IN OTHER PARTS OF THE WORLD.
YU MIAO RECENTLY OPENED J F BOOKS, WASHINGTON’S ONLY CHINESE BOOKSTORE. THE CHINESE GOVERNMENT FORCED HIS BOOKSTORE IN SHANGHAI OUT OF BUSINESS SIX YEARS AGO.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Yu Miao, owner of JF Books:
“Opening a bookstore here has opened a new chapter in my life. I am more focused on how to better manage the quality of this bookstore."
YU SAYS HE HAS BEEN SURPRISED BY THE COMMUNITY SUPPORT.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Joyce Chen, bookstore customer:
“I’m very happy to have a Chinese bookstore like this in D.C., because I can do good shopping and at the same time have some spiritual connections with some authors in China.”
EVEN THOUGH YU HAS FOUND A SECOND HOME ABROAD, CHINA IS NEVER FAR FROM HIS MIND.
SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Yu Miao, owner of JF Books:
