"Basically, what we have done is a tribute to that religious moment, which is super important for the people in the north region of Brazil, to talk about how we are demanding the decision makers, especially of Brazil, but from all over the world to keep their promises in relation to COP29 and about COP30, about the land demarcation, about Indigenous rights and about keeping the 1.5 (degrees Celsius target). So, we are asking for them to keep their promises of making a COP30 for the people and also to keep their promises of making sure that we guarantee the rights of the people as well as tax over wealth so that we can finance the climate mitigation and adaptation."

STORYLINE:
Climate activists staged a demonstration at the UN’s COP29 talks in Baku on Saturday, calling on the world leaders to "keep their promises" when it come to tackling planetary warming.

Activists held up signs urging for promises to be kept and tied ribbons to ropes in tribute to a religious tradition called Cirio de Nossa Senhora de Nazaré in the north region of Brazil.

One activist, Carolina Oliveira Dias, called for decision makers to also ensure the rights of Indigenous people.

"We are demanding the decision makers, especially of Brazil, but from all over the world to keep their promises in relation to COP29 and about COP30 about the land demarcation, about Indigenous rights and about keeping the 1.5 (degrees Celsius target)," said Dias.

Demonstrators asked for rich countries, which are responsible for most of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming, to pay their fair share in the climate finance negotiations taking place at this year’s U.N. climate conference.
