“For the longest time, the climate crisis has been thought of as something about polar bear, something about tree frogs, something about rain forests, but really it’s about us. And so we want the public and politicians to understand that connection that the climate crisis is a health crisis, that when we have these disaster events and the global heating that’s impacting all of us, including you and including me. So by making that connection with health we are hoping that allows people to understand that this is really important that we deal with this. We can’t ignore this problem.”

“But we must focus on how we can stop the pollution from its source versus trying to find carbon scheme, trading schemes that are doing nothing but allow rich countries continue to pollute globally. And we must make sure that rich countries around the world who’ve contributed to the historical greenhouse gas emission globally need to pay their fair share of what their moral obligation is for the rest of the world. The United States is talking about setting billions of dollars, but we know as indigenous people and global citizens, that what we need is actually trillions of dollars. In order to just to adapt and mitigate the impending climate collapse that is definitely on its way to the northern hemisphere.”

STORYLINE:
Physicians and indigenous people staged demonstrations at COP29 to urge a fossil fuel phaseout and for rich countries to pay up for the global climate crisis.
A group of physicians demonstrated CPR on a globe Friday morning at the venue of the UN’s climate change conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, to raise awareness of global warming.
“By making that connection with health we are hoping that allows people to understand that this is really important that we deal with this. We can’t ignore this problem,” said Canadian physician Joseph Vipond.
Indigenous and religious groups sang and played instruments.
“We must make sure that rich countries around the world who’ve contributed to the historical greenhouse gas emission globally need to pay their fair share of what their moral obligation is for the rest of the world,” said Jacob Maurice Johns from the US Climate Action Network.
The chief goal of COP29, as this year’s talks are known, is working out how much money wealthier nations will pay to help developing countries like Sudan.
