"We had a fossil fuel phase out action, this is basically an action supported by almost all civil society movements within the UNFCCC COP to demand a phase out of fossil fuels now, and we don’t just want it to phase out, we need a just, equitable, funded phase out transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems because we can’t leave anyone behind, and we need it to be immediate and we need it to happen now because people are drowning. We are losing countries, we are losing people’s lives, and rich countries are just refusing to acknowledge it and refusing to pay up, so this is why we’re here"

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Afanyu Yembe Njamnshi, climate activist:
"We need to double the amount of money that comes to Africa for adaptation, and we are demanding that there should be more grant based rather than investment or loans because that is the only way you can help Africa truly if you want them to adapt to climate change. We are also demanding that in adapting, we need to have energy, and energy can facilitate us to adapt, so we are demanding that the global north, the polluting countries and others should double the amount of money that is coming for energy access for the continent so it can help the African continent to better adapt to climate change"

STORYLINE:
Climate activists staged a demonstration in Baku Friday demanding the phase out of fossil fuels and calling upon polluting countries to pay up.
Demonstrators asked for rich countries, which are responsible for most of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming, to pay their fair share in the climate finance negotiations taking place at this year’s U.N. climate conference, COP29.
One of the climate activists Amalen Sathananthar called for “a just, equitable, funded phase out transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy systems.”
Later in the day, climate activists from Africa staged a demonstration demanding more funds to help African countries adapt to climate change.
"We need to double the amount of money that comes to Africa for adaptation, and we are demanding that there should be more grant based rather than investment or loans" said climate activist Afanyu Yembe Njamnshi.
