“From our point of view, this advertising operation is a disgrace, because today Airbnb, Booking and the main platforms for short term rentals are literally driving people out of, not only the city centre but also from semi-peripheral and suburban neighbourhoods too. Because today this process of gentrification, I would say now of touristification, is literally causing rental prices to skyrocket and people can no longer afford to rent a house. We are at the point where not only is the price of a house too high, but apartments are no longer there, the properties are no longer available."

STORYLINE:
The ancient Roman Colosseum will be the venue of a gladiator fight – albeit staged – for the first time in two millennia after $1.5 million in support from Airbnb that aims to help the restoration and enhancement of the Colosseum’s heritage.
Under the deal that aims to promote “a more conscious tourism,” 16 Airbnb platform users will be able to participate in faux gladiator fights after the structure’s closing time on May 7-8, taking the same underground route used by gladiators in ancient Rome to reach the arena.
Reservations for the experience open Nov. 27.
Local residents and tourists did not seem to appreciate the initiative as they are both very aware of the impact of mass tourism and short term tourist rentals on Rome.
“This advertising operation is a disgrace,” said Alberto Campailla, head of the Italian charity Nonna Roma, “because today Airbnb, Booking and the main platforms for short term rentals are literally driving people out of not only the city centre, but also from semi-peripheral and suburban neighbourhoods too.”
Russo characterised it as one of the many arrangements to help finance projects at the park.
