STORYLINE:
Residents arrived at an evacuation center as a powerful typhoon approached Cagayan province in the Philippines on Thursday.
Emergency workers and volunteers unloaded supplies at the school that been converted into a shelter.
Typhoon Usagi was packing sustained winds of up to 185 kilometers (115 miles) per hour and gusts of up to 230 kph (143 mph).
The typhoon was forecast to further strengthen before slamming on Thursday afternoon into the coast of Cagayan province in the northern tip of Luzon, the Philippines’ most populous region.
Another storm brewing in the Pacific may hit northern Philippines this weekend, according to state forecasters.
