3. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carlos Vives, recording artist: -on the honor of being Person of the Year and representing Colombia throughout his career –
"I have always represented my country and today I feel that I am here because of those oral traditions. I feel like I’m here because of those musicians, those poets, for those singers who gave us an inheritance that a generation like mine wanted to use in a modern way and to feel proud to be Colombians, to feel proud to be Hispanic or Latin American. I’m very proud to carry that flag. It’s been 30 years when I began to create Colombian music and of course the theme was Colombia. Thirty years ago it was very difficult to talk about Colombia and this was an opportunity for me to expose people to our (Colombia’s) music and to our simple, very Colombian lifestyle."

5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Carlos Vives, recording artist:
"Yes. Of course, learning more about my country also helped me to take the path I took in music. Understanding what the message was and discover who had given me in my culture different tools. For me it was important because then it already gave me some very important reasons to go out and work. Today, I work with my foundation for the territory and for the people. The territory in which I was born and which took me many years to understand what the reality was and what my role was going to be as an artist and as a Colombian. To understand it and to contribute to improving the situations that our territory and our people have experienced of violence, of many things that we have not understood about our territory and our people. We’ve done a lot of damage. I knew a few years ago that the reason I chose to sing was to improve these situations."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Emilio Estefan, music executive/recording artist:
"We started the whole movement of Latino music. We know each other, but when he asked me to produce ‘Fruta Fresca,’ for me, it’s one of the highlights of my career. Because, I mean, it was so hard to go to a label and being from Colombia. I said, ‘Well, we don’t want to change anything. This album is big and the album won the Grammy. So to me, to be in his history is a beautiful thing because I know he represents that Latinos help each other. It doesn’t matter where you come from. At the end, we’re very proud of our community. We are a a young generation that, you know, we love this country, we love and appreciate everything that happened. But, you know, to be part of this Carlos movement. And tonight is a big celebration. I mean, you see how he was kissing me because we are like family. So, you know, I’m very proud of him tonight."

(Reporter: "And, you know, we saw whether it was a positive night or a negative night for people. We saw the impact that Latinos had in this past election. I wanted to ask you as a musician, what would you say is the role of the artist in times like these to push people to be politically active and socially active?")
