1. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Rafael Grossi during interview
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director General:
"You know, I should trust all my member states but I need to verify and in the case of Iran we cannot ignore a history which has been patchy. There were moments, and it’s not myself or my opinion, that the country has been found at fault in its international obligations by the governors of the IAEA, by the U.N. Security Council, so we cannot ignore that. At the same time, at the same time, we are not judging intentions. What we need is to see facts. And in this case, we need to see facts and we need to see engagement from Iran so that we can, they always tell me that they want to be treated as a normal country. I say, you know, ‘I have your medicine, be transparent, work with us, explain,’ and, of course, it’s easier said than done. And this is what we are trying to do and one of the chapters will be tomorrow.“

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director General:
“I’m a diplomat, I believe in diplomatic solutions. I believe, and I believe it is possible, it is possible to come to a place where we have something there, a system of verification, monitoring, which will give us the confidence that we need. But for that, I need, on the one hand, the confidence, the support of the international community, including Israel, including the United States, including everybody, supporting the IAEA, and I need Iran to engage.
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rafael Grossi, International Atomic Energy Agency Director General:
I would not use as a metric, the president of the United States, if you allow me, my metrics is what Iran does and what we ask them to do. And this, of course, in their historical line may change. And you may have moments with one administration that were more promising and at these moments could be ironic, maybe, if you want to correlate with with one administration or the other. Of course, there are political cycles, there are political moments. But, you know, I must remain professionally optimistic, which means not naïve, not starry-eyed, focussed, eyes on the ball, but without, you know, our priorities, without prejudice. Otherwise, I cannot do my job."

STORYLINE:
The head of the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog said Tuesday he’s hopeful that meetings this week with Iranian officials, including the country’s new president, can lead to a breakthrough in monitoring the country’s nuclear program.
Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), will travel to Iran on Wednesday to meet for the first time with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who was elected in July.
Grossi said he hopes to build on positive discussions he had with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi during the U.N. General Assembly in September.
"I should trust all my member states but I need to verify and in the case of Iran we cannot ignore a history which has been patchy," Grossi told The Associated Press during an interview on Tuesday.
"But, you know, I must remain professionally optimistic, which means not naïve, not starry-eyed, focussed, eyes on the ball, but without, you know, our priorities, without prejudice," he added.
Iran says its program is for energy purposes, not to build weapons.
The deal included the lifting of economic sanctions on Iran.
