STORYLINE:
China on Tuesday called on Germany to cease what it called “official exchanges” with Taiwan as a junior German minister plans to visit the self-ruled island this week.
Udo Philipp, a deputy to Economy Minister Robert Habeck of the Greens, is in Taiwan this week, and he will attend a meeting of the Taiwan-Germany Joint Business Council and visit Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, according to media reports.
China is against any official exchanges and relations between Taiwan and other foreign governments because it claims Taiwan part of its national territory and not an independent country.
Separately, Lin refuted the Philippines’ allegation that China is increasing pressure over the South China Sea disputes, saying that the escalation of the situation in the waters was caused by the Philippine’s “infringement and provocation.”
“If the Philippines stops infringing and provoking, there will be no more disturbances at sea,” Lin said after the Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro complained about Beijing’s growing assertiveness at sea.
Confrontations between Chinese and Philippine coast guard and naval forces in the disputed sea passage have spiked since last year, which has sparked fears that the United States — Manila’s longtime treaty ally — may get drawn into a major conflict.
At the briefing, Lin congratulated Mauritius’ opposition leader Navin Ramgoolam on winning the country’s election by a landslide.
