“For many years, the U.S. has been bolstering the Philippines’ infringement and provocation in the South China Sea to serve its geopolitical interests, fueling instability in the South China Sea. Such a malicious intention is obvious to all. The US demands that all countries comply with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), yet it does not join the Convention itself, which is a typical example of hypocrisy and double standards.”

“Some American politicians are trying to turn back the wheel of history and bring China-US economic and trade relations back to the Cold War era. This violates WTO (World Trade Organization) rules, harms the common interests of China and the US, and disrupts the global economy. We urge relevant US lawmakers to comply with WTO rules and stop actions that benefit no one.”

STORYLINE:
China on Monday slammed the U.S. for its support for the Philippines’ new maritime laws that demarcate the government’s claims in the disputed waters in the South China Sea.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. signed into law the Maritime Zones Act and the Philippine Archipelagic Sea Lanes Act on Friday, reaffirming the extent of his country’s maritime territories and right to resources, including in the South China Sea, which China has claimed almost in its entirety.
A nation’s territorial waters and exclusive economic zones are typically defined as the distance from the baselines.
