STORYLINE:
People in Bolivia paid tribute to their dead loved ones on Friday during the annual ‘Ñatitas’ feast at La Paz cemetery.

The tradition celebrates the day of the dead by venerating real skulls of deceased relatives every November 8.

Those living in the Bolivian capital and its surroundings headed to the cemetery on Friday, carrying the skulls of their loved ones which were filled with ornaments, flowers, and other items.

The festivity dates back to ancient Andean peoples.

Ñatitas comes from the Aymara word meaning “flat” or “noseless.”

Devotees attribute to the skulls, which may belong to others or a family member, the mission of guarding their home and fulfilling favours.

The ‘Ñatitas’ closes the celebrations in honour of the dead in Bolivia, one of the most followed and respected dates by the Andean peoples, especially in rural areas and neighbourhoods of the cities.
