"The animal is received by veterinarians and animal educators, where they study the medical and behavioural needs of the animal. This is important because the families that want to adopt go through two filters where they explain their circumstances and the type of animal they can adopt."

STORYLINE:
The deadly floods that hit Valencia last week wreaked havoc across the region killing hundreds, destroying infrastructure and sowing general devastation.

People bore the brunt of it but hundreds of domestic animals were not spared either.

Many perished whilst hundreds of others were separated from their owners or left by them as their homes were destroyed and they found themselves unable to care for pets.

A group of volunteers from local animal shelters and veterinary clinics have – amidst the chaos and mud – organized a temporary animal shelter and adoption service.

The real life "Noah’s Ark" is set up in the playing fields of a sporting association in the Benimaclet district of Valencia, north of the worst hit areas of the flood.

Volunteer Sandra Cervera said that they had dealt with 300 dogs and 200 cats so far.

The camp also receives sacks of dog and cat food donated by animal lovers plus hundreds of muliti-coloured collars and leads.

Volunteers hope the adoption of the lost animals is temporary and that owners can eventually be reunited with their furry friends.
