STORYLINE:
Residents and tourist in the Italian capital were seen waiting for hours at Rome’s Termini station on Friday as transport workers held a 24-hour strike which brought nearly all busses, trams and local trains to a halt.

Hundreds of transport workers gathered in front of the Ministry of Public Transport as they took part in the strike, organised by Italy’s major transport unions, calling on the government to renew work contracts and make safety improvements for staff.

Unions said they are urging the government to implement various measures to prevent and stop violent acts against transport workers.

"We are noticing a escalation of violence," Salvatore Pellecchia, General secretary of the FIT CISL transport union said at the demonstration.

"We can’t let this happen again. The workers must come back home in one piece.”

The strike left many stranded in the capital.

"I couldn’t go to the university," student Paolo Gennaro said.

"All the buses are going in different directions… I will have to take a taxi soon because it is the only possibility I have.”
