7. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Maria Garcia, 42 years-old, factory worker:
“We put on the facemask when we are cleaning the mud. We are aware of the odour and the bacteria. Right now, we have moved places to clean in other locations and we took our facemasks off. But we wear gloves and facemasks responsibly, and also waterproof boots, an item hard to find these days.”
8. Various of people walking streets covered with mud
9. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Jesus Martinez, 23 years-old, volunteer cleaner and university student:
“I think the mud is toxic because in the end there are so many chemicals mixed with it. You can smell it as you walk by, whether you wear a facemask or not smells of oil, paint and other things.”

11. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Juan Garcia, 43 years-old, local resident and army soldier:
“People wear those elements that are given to them. In general, people here wear protection. I’ve seen very few people not wearing facemasks. But, in general, people abide to the advice of wearing protective gear.”

13. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Aldana Nogueras, volunteer nurse:
“Right now, any type of protection is vital, either facemasks or gloves. Many people come here after getting a wound. There are supplies being mobilised. There are many sources of infection around, so, washing hands, wearing facemasks and gloves and disinfecting wounds are the basic things to do. This is like the COVID pandemic. We must protect ourselves.”

14. Set up shots of doctor specialising in preventive medicine
15. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Rafael Orti, Doctor specialising in preventive medicine:
“It’s possible to have a side problem, such as infectious complications like tetanus. But getting infections from yester-year, like cholera or else? It’s very unlikely. Let’s not create more alarm than necessary. Any consumption of inadequate water or food could lead to the usual problems. The same ones you could get during a countryside picnic, but, because there are many people affected (by the floods), then those risks multiply by a thousand and that could lead to other problems.”

STORYLINE:
Volunteers in Spain are helping rebuild areas one week after the devastating floods that caused more than 200 deaths in the region.
In the working-class district of Sedaví the landscape has changed radically. Hundreds of destroyed cars are being piled up, all of them covered and surrounded by mud.
As medical supplies arrive and are distributed by volunteers, national and regional authorities are advising residents and volunteers in Sedaví to wear gloves and facemasks to protect themselves from eventual infections that could come as a result of direct contact with mud.
Doctor Rafael Orti, specialising in preventive medicine, says direct contact with mud or sludge should always be avoided, especially after getting a wound.
