STORYLINE:
Germany’s top diplomat reaffirmed the country’s support for Ukraine on the eve of a U.S. presidential election that could bring far-reaching changes in Washington’s policy toward Russia’s all-out invasion of its neighbor.
"We stand firmly by your side, as long as you need us, because you are also fighting for the freedom of all of us in Europe," said German foreign minister Annalena Baerbock during a news conference with her Ukrainian counterpart Andrii Sybiha.
"And regardless of the outcome of tomorrow’s (U.S.) election, this also means for us Germans that we must not make our policy dependent on the outcome of the election, but that we must continue to invest in our own self-protection by supporting Ukraine," she added.
Baerbock arrived Monday in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv on an unannounced visit.
Germany is Ukraine’s second biggest weapons supplier after the U.S., and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock vowed that Berlin’s backing would remain steadfast.
