STORYLINE:
The UN Special Representative in Iraq visited Marjaiya – the highest Shia religious authority – on Monday in Najaf.

Mohamed al-Hassan, United Nations Special Representative in Iraq arrived in Najaf this morning and met with Ali al-Sistani, the highest Shia religious authority in Iraq.

Upon a request from the Iraq government, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq UNAMI will end its operations in the country in late 2025.

"The United Nations will not abandon Iraq and will remain supportive of its path towards stability, sustainable development, and respect of human rights," Said al-Hassan in a press conference he held after the meeting with al Sistani.

The UN special representative thanked al-Sistani for his ongoing support to UNAMI mission in the country and said that the U.N. remains ready to provide advice and everything they can, if the Iraqi government asked them.

"We are here to serve this country and we do not intervene in its internal affairs but in a good way and (giving) advice only," he said.

The UNAMI was formed by the United Nations Security Council on Aug. 14, 2003 to support development efforts in the country, months after the toppling of Saddam Hussein’s regime in April 2003.

At a request from Baghdad, the Security Council decided that the United Nations’ political mission in Iraq would leave the country by the end of 2025.
