3. Mickaëlle Paty (with blue folder in her handbag), sister of Samuel Paty, walking and entering courtroom

5. SOUNDBITE (French) Francis Szpiner, lawyer representing the son of Samuel Paty:
“We expect that the justice system will be up to the crime that has been committed. It’s an unheard-of fact in the history of the republic. It’s the first time a teacher is assassinated because he is a teacher. The Islamists had already killed a teacher, but they killed him by antisemitism. It was Mohamed Merah in Ozar Hatorah (name of Jewish school) case (an Islamist extremist killed seven people in attacks on a Jewish school and French paratroopers in Toulouse in 2012). But the teacher was not the target. The target was the Jewish school. This time, a teacher was killed because he was teaching the freedom of expression. So it’s a defiance of the republic and I hope the republic will respond forcefully.”

7. SOUNDBITE (French) Ouadie Elhamamouchi, lawyer representing Abdelhakim Sefrioui, one of the accused:
“What’s important in this trial for my client is, first, to show the world that he was absolutely against the despicable act against the teacher Samuel Paty. I will have the opportunity to mention it during the entire trial and to confirm it clearly. You will have the occasion to see it through this trial, because a trial by public opinion has been made against Mr. Sefrioui, but in this trial which will only deal with facts, you will see that Mr. Sefrioui was totally innocent faced with these facts. Because, once again, in this case, he is the only one and I say again he is the only one- who never had any link with the terrorist.”
8. Thibault de Montbrial, lawyer representing Samuel Paty’s sister Mickaëlle, outside courtroom
9. SOUNDBITE (French) Thibault de Montbrial, lawyer representing Samuel Paty’s sister Mickaëlle:
“The trial that opens today will enable everybody in the French society to become aware of the direct link, extremely clear, that exists between rigorist Islam as practised by a minority of 20-30% Muslims according to public opinion research and the violence that can lead to such a terrifying act, to the beheading of a French teacher in a quiet suburban city, on a Friday afternoon, on an Autumn day in France. The mechanism that started when the young pupil Chnina lied about Samuel Paty’s behavior during the class, the way her father, instead of reasoning with her has exploited this incident to make a national call, used then by the accused Sefrioui, with the help of some associations that are today dissolved, such as the CCIF (Collectif Contre l’Islamophobie en France) which unfortunately re-constituted in Belgium. All these have set up a chain of events that has put a target on this French teacher and resulted 15 days later in the applying of a sharia, that is to say his beheading in the name of Islam.”
