STORYLINE:
Chinese President Xi Jinping greeted visiting Finnish President Alexander Stubb at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Tuesday.

The two leaders had previously met 14 years ago, Xi noted in his welcome remarks to Stubb, when Stubb was the Foreign Minister in Finland and Xi was vice president in China.

“I am willing to work together with you to guide both countries in strengthening strategic cooperation, carrying forward our tradition of friendship and making further progress on a future-facing new model of cooperative relations,” said Xi.

Finland is one of the most active European providers of military and civilian aid to Ukraine and joined NATO last year after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

China on the other hand, has been criticised by the U.S., and NATO for its support of Russia. Specifically, the U.S. and NATO have called China an enabler of the war.

“Right now we are very much in a situation whereby Russian aggression has violated international law. I look forward to discussing peaceful solutions on that path as well,” Stubb told Xi during the meeting.

This is Stubb’s first trip to China since becoming president in March.
