STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Monday called on Japan to work for a “constructive and stable China-Japan relationship” while dismissing a question on the outcome of the country’s parliamentary election.
Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party lost a majority in the 465-seat lower house in a key parliamentary election Sunday, a punishment by voters’ outrage over the governing party’s extensive financial scandals.
“This is Japan’s internal affairs, and China has no comment on it,” China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said in Beijing at a daily news briefing.
The Liberal Democratic Party remains the top party in Japan’s parliament, and a change of government is not expected. But the results create political uncertainty.
At the briefing, Lin underscored the need for a cease-fire when asked about the recent escalation of tensions in the Middle East.
Israel attacked military targets in Iran with pre-dawn airstrikes Saturday in retaliation for the barrage of ballistic missiles the Islamic Republic fired on Israel earlier this month.
Without naming a specific country, Lin said those involved should “avoid further escalating regional security risks,” and major powers with influence should “play a constructive role in creating the necessary conditions for easing regional tensions.”
