STORYLINE:
One of Turkey’s largest defense, aviation and aerospace trade fairs took place in Istanbul this week.
More than 1,200 companies showcased high-tech and innovative weaponry and products ranging from robots to rockets.
The event, which kicked off Tuesday, was overshadowed by an attack on the headquarters of TUSAS, a key defense company that killed five people and wounded more than 20 others in the nation’s capital Wednesday.
Abdylla Orazgylyjov, manager of a factory attending the fair, said that the attack seemed intended to hinder the industry’s progress.
“We, as Turkish engineers and companies, will only work harder and make even greater efforts in response to this attack. In terms of precautions, we will increase our measures," Orazgylyjov said.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who spoke at the event on Friday, said “no hostile terrorist attack can … stand in the way of our ideal of a great and powerful Turkey”
The PKK said TUSAS was chosen as a target because weapons produced at the Ankara complex “killed thousands of civilians, including children and women, in Kurdistan.”
