STORYLINE:
Hundreds of cyclists dressed as ghosts, skeletons and movie characters streamed down one of Mexico City’s main avenues late Friday to celebrate the Day of the Dead.

Many were dressed as Catrinas, the iconic stylised skulls adorned with flowers which represent a bridge between the living and the dead.

For Claudia Zaragoza, a 43-year-old teacher who took up cycling during the COVID-19 pandemic, the event combined her two favorite things: "the Day of the Dead and the bike, it’s great."

"I think there should be more moments like this, maybe not wait for a particular celebration but rather for more spaces to be opened to cyclists," she added.

The Day of the Dead is a multi-day festival that commemorates the deceased, often taking on a humorous tone as friends and family recall amusing anecdotes.
