1. Various of the fossil “Vulcan” displayed ahead of auction at Dampierre castle
2. Close up of vertebrae
3. Close up of tail, split so the fossil fits in the exhibition room
4. SOUNDBITE (French), Eric Mickeler, auction expert:
“This specimen is gigantic because it’s over 20 metres long, 20.5 metres to be exact. In its lifetime, it weighed between 25 and 30 tons. It was an animal that lived in groups, you might say herds, of adults.”
5. Various of the fossil skull
6. Close up of gastralia (floating bones)
7. Close up of foot bones
8. SOUNDBITE (French), Eric Mickeler, auction expert:
“It was what we call in association, which means the bones were found next to each other right up to the head which is approximately 50% complete. It’s exceptional because most apatosaurs, or brontosaurs as they used to be called, are often composite. For example, in the United States, the one in New York is made up of more than three specimens if I remember correctly.”

13. SOUNDBITE (French), Florent Barbarossa, auctioneer:
“Auctions have been going on for twenty years now. It was only in the media with the T-Rex that everyone knows, and there was a market where prices were always more or less the same. And then, over the last two years or so, the records just kept on coming. Eight of the top 10 auction sales have taken place in the last two years. In July, “Apex” multiplied its estimate by ten. It proves that the market is really… (makes a hand sign of the sharp increase). And it was a sector with few players, so ultimately little competition, so it’s become something very interesting today.”
14. Various of auctioneer Olivier Collin du Bocage being interviewed by a journalist
15. SOUNDBITE (French), Olivier Collin du Bocage, auctioneer:
“It’s a cultural good, it’s also a financial good. It can be conceived in different ways. It’s going to take me to Manila, to Dubai, to the United States, to meet a new demand, a new clientele who are no longer necessarily interested in the 18th century chest of drawers, but for whom a dinosaur is comparable to a Basquiat."
16. Various of visitors looking at the dinosaur on display
17. SOUNDBITE (French), Pierre Vernet, visitor:
“I understand, yes. You need a bit of space, that’s for sure! But still, it’s a real eye-catcher in a collection. I imagine that when you have a lot of money, it can be a way of having an exceptional piece that stands out from a painting or a sculpture.”
18. SOUNDBITE (French), Cyril Fernandes, visitor:
“It must be visible to as wide a public as possible. Privatising like that, for just one person, depends on what’s being done afterwards, but I’m putting it into perspective. I’m thinking, well, if it’s just for purely personal pleasure…”
19. Various of merged caudal vertebrae due to pathology yet to be determined
21. Various of dinosaur on display
