Israel strikes Lebanese ancient city in Baalbek as famine looms in Gaza | DW News

Israel’s military has issued another evacuation order for residents of Lebanon’s eastern city of Baalbek. Lebanon’s health ministry says Israeli airstrikes have killed 19 people around the city on Wednesday. Israel says it struck a Hezbollah command center in Baalbek and another in southern Lebanon. Thousands have already fled the area.

Baalbek is known for its Roman temples, which are a UNESCO world heritage site. Lebanon’s prime minister has expressed hope that a ceasefire agreement could soon be reached with Israel. US envoy Amos Hochstein is expected to travel to the region for truce talks.

Meanwhile in Gaza, Israel has been conducting a large scale offensive against Hamas militants for several weeks. The Israel Defense Force said the militants have regrouped in parts of northern Gaza and ordered Palestinian civilians living in the area to evacuate further south. However, according to the UN, nearly half a million Palestinians remain in the northern part of the territory. They are facing increasing risk of famine due to aid shortages. Two sisters – Riham and Faten Lobbad – filmed their own accounts of daily life in Gaza City for DW.
