STORYLINE:
China on Wednesday reiterated concerns over the escalating tensions in the Middle East after Israel said it killed a top Hezbollah official who had been widely expected to become the group’s next leader.
There was no immediate confirmation from Hezbollah about the fate of Hashem Safieddine, a powerful cleric who was expected to succeed Hassan Nasrallah, one of the group’s founders.
Safieddine was killed in early October in a strike that also killed 25 other Hezbollah leaders, according to Israel, whose airstrikes in southern Lebanon in recent months have killed many of Hezbollah’s top leaders, leaving the group in disarray.
“We oppose actions that infringe on Lebanon’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and any moves that exacerbate conflicts and fuel regional tensions,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said when asked about the matter at a daily news briefing in Beijing.
China hoped the relevant parties would “return to the path of political resolution as soon as possible, address conflicts and differences through communication and dialogue and cool down the regional situation,” Lin added.
Separately, Lin refuted Taiwan’s Defence Minister Wellington Koo’s remarks and denied Taiwan’s sovereignty.
“Taiwan is a province of China. There is no such thing as a defence ministry or defence minister in Taiwan, and this is not a diplomatic question,” Lin said.
His comment is a response to Koo’s warning that a blockade of Taiwan by China would be regarded as an "act of war," an apparent reference to large-scale military drills conducted by Chinese forces last week that simulated such a scenario.
Lin also justified the patrol of a Chinese aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait as “absolutely natural” while affirming the country’s claim over the self-ruled island.
At the briefing, Lin confirmed the detention and deportation of a Volkswagen employee in China for alleged drug use.
