Mozambique’s ruling party hangs on to power in contested election | DW News

Mozambique’s ruling party candidate Daniel Chapo has been declared the winner of the country’s presidential election held on October 9th. The head of the national election commission announced that Chapo secured 70 % of the vote and his closest challenger just 20 percent. The victory by the Frelimo party allows it to extend its 49 years in power since independence from Portugal. The opposition alleges electoral fraud and their supporters took to the streets to protest the result. We spoke to DW correspondent Diane Hawker in Johannesburg.
